MTV: Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy Will Finally Be Released November 23: Report

Axl Rose

Axl Rose

MTV News reports:

Web site claims that’s the day long-awaited LP will land on Best Buy shelves

Well, it’s looking more and more likely that Guns N’ Roses‘ follow-up to 1991’s Use Your Illusion albums,Chinese Democracy, will actually see the retail light of day in our lifetime.

Last month there were rumors that frontman Axl Rose had inked a deal with Best Buy allowing the chain to be the album’s sole purveyor, and that GN’R’s manager, Andy Gould, told 900 Best Buy employees during a Dallas convention that the LP would be on store shelves by November 25. Now comes word from Hits Daily Double (you need to register to access the site) that Interscope has arrived at a hard-and-fast, set-your-clock-to-it release date of November 23.

If The World review by IGN.com

Axl Rose

Axl Rose

October 9, 2008 - It may have taken Axl Rose more than a decade (actually 15 years) to deliver a new Guns N’ Roses album, but the light at the end of the tunnel is slowly beginning to shine a little brighter.

While Rose has been coy with the media and harsh with anybody who has leaked tracks online, he’s been a shrewd man in terms of how he is officially setting up the proposed November 25th release of the long-awaitedChinese Democracy.

First was the high profile placement of “Shackler’s Revenge” on Rock Band 2. Now comes the equally high profile placement of the next official track from the album, “If The World.”

Tacked on at the end of Ridley Scott’s new international thriller Body Of Lies, starring box office icons Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, the song is the first thing you hear once the end credits begin to roll.

In stark contrast to the abrasive electro shock and generic industrial glitz of “Shackler’s”, this track flips a complete 180 in the opposite direction.

Keeping in tune with the film’s distinct Middle Eastern thematics, Axl and band have laid out a slinky, neo-soul number that is surprisingly good.

Drenched in electronic funk slither with Rose affecting a slightly effeminate vocal croon, the track would actually have made a stellar James Bond theme song.

At the core of the song is a syncopated drum and bass groove that is warm and supple. It’s wrapped around a slow burn expanse of guitar and then topped off with Rose’s sedated caterwaul cum croon.

As with the sinewy vibe of the music itself, the core lyrical refrain of ” If the world would end today/then all the dreams we had would all just drift away, oh/You know there’s nothing more to say/if the world would end and our love slipped away…” is a perfect fit to the film’s thematics of global peril and dangerous love.

“Having only gotten one listen (and the song is relatively short, to boot), it’s hard to really nail the song and how it will fit in with the rest of Chinese Democracy, but first impressions were strong, with the strange floating funk ambiance working surprisingly well for Mr. Rose. If the rest of the album is along these lines GN’R may be back in force, albeit on a uniquely different tact.

The only bummer is that those looking to score a copy of the track will have to settle for going to the movies instead. As of now there are no plans to include it on the official soundtrack”

Richard Fortus: Pale Divine Launches Website, Releases Limited-Edition Boxed Set

Richard Fortus

Richard Fortus

from: riverfronttimes.com

Speaking of Guns N’ Roses, current guitarist Richard Fortus dropped me a line a few weeks ago to tell me some news about thePale Divine reunion show goings-on. (It’s still Monday, December 29 at the Pageant.)

First, the band put together a very comprehensive new Website atwww.theeyes-paledivine.com , which contains a comprehensive discography and history, links to audio/video and press.

Even cooler, Fortus says the band is producing a limited-edition (1000 copies) boxed set that’s a veritable treasure trove of Pale Divine rarities: “It’s a custom hard-bound book type of package that will contain 2 DVDs of old live footage and backstage stuff and then 2 CDs. One CD will be a rerelease of our first indie record called Freedom in a Cage. The other disc is going to be the demos that we did for the second Atlantic record that was never recorded. It will come with a stitched, 16-page book of photos.”

This will be available through the Pale Divine/Eyes website and at the Pageant store. (In fact, Fortus says there’s also going to be a package deal where you can get two reserved balcony tickets, the boxed set and a T-shirt for a discount price at the website/Pageant store.)

Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal Interview: talks about touring with the Hives, opening for Guns N Roses, new EODM album

Jesse Hughes

Jesse Hughes

Eagles of Death Metal are a cool straight-up rock band out of Indio, CA. Their lead singer Jesse Hughes is originally from South Carolina but he rocks like pure Americana (what the hell did I mean by that?) Anyways, Josh Homme (lead singer of Queens Of The Stone Age) plays drums for EODM except on some tours. Foo Fighters lead singer, Dave Grohl, is a big fan of the band and so is Jack Black. In fact, both appeared in EODM’s video for “I Want You So Hard (Boy’s Bad News). Eagles of Death Metal opened for Guns N Roses a few years ago and got kicked off the tour because Axl Rose decided that he didn’t like them anymore. Jesse sat down with Blip TV to talk about that, touring with The Hives and EODM’s new album. Check it out.

BLIND MELON: Excerpts From ‘A Devil On One Shoulder’ Book Available

Shannon Hoon

Shannon Hoon

Two excerpts from the book “A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon” have been posted online, both of them dealing with GUNS N’ ROSES frontman Axl Rose and BLIND MELON’s tour with GN’R in 1993:

* The chapter “Axl and Shannon” can be found at this location.
* Click here for an excerpt from the chapter “Crammed in a Van Tour”(which includes touring with GUNS N’ ROSES in 1993)

“A Devil on One Shoulder” author Greg Prato was interviewed recently for the “Blind Melon Forum Radio Show”. In addition to the taking part in the chat, he picked out his favorite BLIND MELON songs, and read parts of the book. Download the Prato portion of the show as an MP3 audio file at this location.

One of the most tragic stories of the 1990s rock world was that of singerShannon Hoon and his band, BLIND MELON. Despite scoring one of the decade’s most enduring singles and videos, “No Rain”, and a quadruple-platinum hit with their 1992 self-titled debut album (in addition to touring alongside rock’s biggest names), Hoon could not overcome a dangerous drug addiction. Only two records into a promising career, Hoon was dead from an overdose at the age of 28. “A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other” is the first book to tell the group’s story — culled from over 50 exclusive interviews, and featuring many never-before-seen photos.

“A Devil on One Shoulder” was written by journalist Greg Prato, whose work as appeared in a variety of sites and magazines, including All Music GuideBillboard.comRollingStone.com, and Classic Rock magazine, among others. A longtime fan of the band, Greg has been working on this book — with the help of the surviving members of the band — for the past few years. In the process, Greg conducted interviews with such renowned rock names as Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVERGUNS N’ ROSES), Gilby Clarke (GUNS N’ ROSES), Mike Clink (GUNS N’ ROSESproducer), Kim Thayil (SOUNDGARDEN), Jerry Cantrell (ALICE IN CHAINS), Mike Inez (ALICE IN CHAINS), and Craig Ross (LENNY KRAVITZ), plus family and friends — including Shannon’s mother, Nel Hoon.

While it will obviously appeal to fans of Shannon and BLIND MELON, this 344-page paperback book (whose title comes from a phrase that guitarist Rogers Stevens once said to describe Shannon) will also be of interest to fans of GUNS N’ ROSES, as Shannon’s friendship with Axl Rose is chronicled throughout the years, as well as memories of whenMELON opened shows for GN’R in 1993 (at their out-of-control peak). Elsewhere, you’ll find additional stories on SOUNDGARDENALICE IN CHAINSNEIL YOUNGLENNY KRAVITZPAGE & PLANT, and THE ROLLING STONES — all of which are bands that BLIND MELON toured with. And of course, new light is shed directly on this great yet often underrated band, as you get the inside scoop behind the three classicHoon-era albums (the aforementioned “Blind Melon”, 1995’s “Soup”, and 1996’s posthumous release, “Nico”), the story behind “No Rain”, the colorful yet tragic life of Shannon, and the group’s recent rebirth, with new singer Travis Warren (and new album, 2008’s “For My Friends”).

The book is available through www.lulu.com for $19.99 (U.S.), and there are samples to read at the site (including a full chapter, titled “Axl and Shannon”). BLIND MELON and Shannon Hoon’s unforgettable story certainly deserves to be told, and “A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other” covers all the bases. “I am honored that Greg has painstakingly accounted for what the hell happened during those crazy times. He has summed up all the chaos, jubilation, and paranoia that isBLIND MELON,” stated Brad SmithBLIND MELON bassist.

For more information, go to this location (to access the sample chapter, click on the book’s title at the top of the page).

Replacements reunion in the works?

The Replacements

The Replacements

(City Pages) Chris Reimenshneider is reporting that Replacements members Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg have begun “messing around” in the studio with local producer and drummer Michael Bland. From the Pop Life blog:

He sounded enthusiastic about the sessions and said, “It was a lot of fun.” When I asked if they did any recording, though, he answered, “Nah, that’s getting to first base. We’re sort of still in the dugout chewing gum.” As for the general state of the two former ‘Mats mates relationship, he said, “We’re good friends, and I’m sure we’re going to work together again.”

The last time Westerberg and Stinson recorded together was in 2006, when they laid down two tracks for Don’t You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements with Chris Mars.

In other ‘Mats news, Paul Westerberg has released another online-only track, “Bored of Edukation,” which is available for 89 cents through Amazon.

MTV: Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy Was Never Meant To Be Heard, In Bigger Than The Sound

Axl Rose

Axl Rose

Long-delayed LP might finally be released — which means anything is possible. On The Record: W. Axl Rose: The Great Destroyer

There is a passage from Chuck Palahniuk’s book “Fight Club” that strikes me as incredibly appropriate this week, given that there is roughly a 60 percent chance that it may actually be prophetic.

“We wanted to blast the world free of history. … Picture yourself planting radishes and seed potatoes on the 15th green of a forgotten golf course. You’ll hunt elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center and dig clams next to the skeleton of the Space Needle leaning at a 45-degree angle. We’ll paint the skyscrapers with huge totem faces and goblin tikis, and every evening what’s left of mankind will retreat to empty zoos and lock itself in cages as protection against the bears and big cats and wolves that pace and watch us from outside the cage bars at night.”

Oh, did you think I was referring to the implosion of our economy, the freefall on Wall Street, the impending sense of doom that looms over us all like a giant, pitch-black penny loafer, or the fact that pretty soon we’re going to be left wearing barrels like they did during the Great Depression? No, no, no. I’m actually talking about Guns N’ Roses.

Or, more specifically, the fact that — after more than a decade of false starts, empty promises and litigious gymnastics — GN’R’s long-awaited Chinese Democracyalbum could actually be foisted upon us as early as next month, exclusively at your neighborhood Best Buy.

If the reports are true — and given that W. Axl Rose is involved, there’s a very good chance they might not be — then Chinese Democracy is coming, and its release would be an event unlike any other in the history of rock music. The sun would be blotted out, the gates of heaven would open, and we’d all be reduced to grunting, screaming primates. It would be like every bank in the United States failing simultaneously, only more so, because it would involve die-hard Guns N’ Roses fans getting drunk in Best Buy parking lots at midnight. It would reset the clock, empty the reservoirs, crumble the towers. It would be rock-and-roll Year Zero (which is not to be confused with Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero.

This is because Chinese Democracy was never supposed to happen. It was destined to be the eternal punch line, a $13 million albatross and an ongoing testament to the will, ego and insanity of Axl Rose. There is perhaps no rock-and-roll album as starstruck or anticipated in history — eternally promoted by disastrous world tours, tinkered with by no less that five producers and featuring contributions from God-knows-how-many musicians. Democracy has been in the works since at least 1998, victimized by infinite false starts (the industrial mess of “Oh My God,” featured in the industrial-size mess that was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “End of Days,” Rose’s winded performance at the 2002 Video Music Awards, Buckethead) and promised (threatened?) to be released more times than I care to recall. (Resident metalhead Chris Harris attempted to do so in a blog post earlier this year.) It’s become a FEMA-level catastrophe at this point, and the fact that the entire saga has played out before our eyes only makes its actual conclusion seem all the more improbable. This is an album that we were supposed to speculate about, snicker at but never — ever — hear. This just wasn’t supposed to happen.

But now, apparently, it is. And frankly, I’m not sure if we’re prepared. If and when the first crate of Democracy is opened in a Best Buy storeroom, it’ll represent the moment when all bets are off, when anything can happen, music-wise. Will it come bundled with a copy of Dr. Dre’s long-delayed Detox album? Will it inspire My Bloody Valentine or the Pixies to drop new albums? After Democracy, will we finally get to hear Pink Floyd’s Household Objects or the Who’s Lifehouse? The answer to any of those questions might very well be “yes,” if only because, likeDemocracy, no one really believed any of those albums would see the light of day either. In short, it would be entirely possible that we would never not hear anything ever again.

And when it has finally moved from the storeroom to the shelves, will there be mass chaos? When GN’R fans — half-crazed with anticipation, half-dazed from spending the past 48 hours sleeping in line outside an electronics retailer — actually catch a glimpse of the album, will they summarily combust? And are we prepared, in these darkest of times (I’m speaking in terms of the music industry, not Wall Street), for an album that’s unlike any this decade? It could be an honest-to-goodness event, a surefire blockbuster that will cause music fans to behave like music fans, cueing up for midnight sales, throwing the album on in their cars, celebrating the release of a dozen or so pieces of recorded music. We will be transformed into savage rock-and-roll animals. Again, this isn’t supposed to happen.

Oh, and about those pieces of recorded music. They’re insignificant in all this, because really, there is absolutely no way that anyone is going to be happy with the content of Chinese Democracy. It’s just not going to happen. Anticipation is too high, we’ve lost a little bit of faith in the all-knowing Axl, and to be honest, the stuff we’ve heard from the album (none of which, to be fair, might actually be on the album) has been spotty, to say the least. The exception to this is, of course, “Shackler’s Revenge,” the just-released (via “Rock Band 2″) track that is most certainly on the album, and in addition to having a title that reminds me of a National Lampoon film, is also pretty terrible. (OK, it’s really terrible.)

But again, none of that matters, because people are still going to buy the ever-loving crap out of Chinese Democracy, even though they know they’re ultimately going to end up disappointed. They will be strangely compelled to do so, if only because, well, they have to buy it. Likewise, critics will slay the album, because that’s their job, but they will do so knowing that nothing they write will matter in any way, shape or form. None of this has ever happened before. Nothing will be the same ever again.

After typing that last sentence, I got so freaked out that I hid underneath my desk for a good 20 minutes. Eventually, I mustered up the courage to uncurl myself from the fetal position, climb back up into my chair and re-read everything I’ve written so far. And here’s what struck me more than anything: Basically everything I’ve written about Chinese Democracy is interchangeable with this country’s current economic collapse. The idea of the album being released once seemed as impossible as banks failing or massive, multinational brokerage firms filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, yet both are happening. The results of both are relatively terrifying, if only because they mean that, really, nothing is certain anymore. Both involve large sums of money and ego being handled irresponsibly. And both — be it the sinking feeling that Democracy will be rather bad or the proposed $700 billion bailoutcurrently flailing on Capitol Hill — are accompanied by some rather unpleasant side effects. Also, after our economy disintegrates, it’s entirely possible that China might actually buy us, creating an actual Chinese democracy. Marinate on that.

And all of that either proves that Axl Rose is: A) a genius; B) a prognosticator; or C) the rock-and-roll version of T. Boone Pickens, because he’s seemingly omnipresent, insanely wealthy, kind of creepy and is trying to pitch you something that seemslegit, except you can’t shake the lingering feeling that you’re being conned, because, well, the dude’s an oil baron (you know, that and his ties to the whole Swift Boat thing). Either way, he’s terrifying. He’s going to bring society to its knees. He’s going to change the world forever.

Get your barrels ready. Chinese Democracy could be right around the corner.
